The Federal Republic of Nigeria is an independent federation since 1960, and officially a democratic secular country which comprises of 36 states and 1 Federal Capital Territory located in Abuja. The modern state originated from British colonial rule beginning in the 19th century, and took its present territorial shape with the merging of the Southern Nigeria Protectorate and Northern Nigeria Protectorate in 1914.
Nigeria also has a number of ancient and indigenous kingdoms with a whole lot of moral and cultural administrative structures consisting of highly exalted traditional stools cutting across the 36 states of the federation with over 250 ethnic groups of which the three largest are the Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba ethnic nationality;.
The federal republic of Nigeria is politically divided into six Geo-Political Zones: South-East, South-West, South-South, North-East, North-West, and North-Central. The eastern region of Nigeria is geographically located in South-Eastern part of Nigeria, now commonly referred to as the EAST, the concept of the “EAST” was brought about by the famous Alex Ekwueme’s recommendations, following the division of the country into three parts in the 1950s and the further splitting that occurred between 1967- to -1975 under the Gowon Administration that was characterized with the emergence of more states that are now the core Eastern States of the Federation. These states include the following;
o Abia State
o Anambra State
o Ebonyi State
o Enugu State
o Imo State
These five states are endowed with various natural resources, solid mineral deposits, reputable human resource and corporate organizations, agencies, industries and SMEs. These individuals and corporate organizations are the driving force behind the growth and economic activities in the Eastern part of the Country and overall advancement and growth of Nigeria. Over the years there were discoveries of deposits of crude oil in commercial quantities in some of the states, this in turn have recognized the Eastern Region as contributors to the total quantity of petroleum products in Nigeria and over all contributed to the GDP of the Country.
All the five Eastern State are mainly Igbo-dominated area that seceded as part of an independent Biafra in 1967. The region is industrially inclined with high level with a very high Literacy rate in the region their entrepreneurial acumen is a requisite advantage for attracting investors and industries.
After India and China, Nigeria has the third-largest youth population in the world, this implies that Nigeria has over 90 million young people who need to be mentored and properly guarded. Arguably the productivity of any nation lies within the realization and ability of its young population to harness their potentials and positively impact their immediate society. In the Eastern Region there are lots of role models, outstanding individuals, corporate organizations who are setting standard benchmarks for excellence, therefore identifying and celebrating these role models becomes a way of showcasing noteworthy professionals and entrepreneurs who despite the challenges in the land didn’t bulge into mediocrity rather are building global brands and competence that evidently serves in redirecting and mentoring the youths.
But you will agree with me that prior to this time, there has been no dedicated platform that takes the onus of recognizing and celebrating these captains of industries and organizations modelling excellence and championing the course of sustainable innovations and job creation in the Eastern region, thus, The first ever EASTERN HERITAGE AWARD; an innovative platform, conceptualized to recognize and showcase distinguished accomplishments, noteworthy service, outstanding individuals and innovations in all of the eastern states in Nigeria.
